City and Guilds 119 Day 3

Day three was as stressful as the previous day. Not just for myself but the other students were finding the Continuous Album with Calico or Fraynots challenging.  I'm still finding the reversible PVA difficult to use. It is tacky and only applies well when stippled on rather than brush strokes.  For me stippled brushing lifts up the paper or cloth which increases the chance of glue getting on the reverse side.  This bind has certainly taken me out of my comfort zone.

The instructor Kate has been pretty damn decent about dealing with my frustrations. So full marks for her.

A hearty breakfast before starting my day

At least it isn't raining

So with the Continuous photo album we were asked to make it square rather than rectangular.

I used the vertical plough and we had to trim it again as the blade was dull which caused fraying on the sides of the paper rather than a clean cut.

I found rounding the spine to be more difficult on this than a traditional sewn spine. I'm going to need a lot of practice with this type of photo album.

It seems my transition lenses are causing me a lot of difficulty.  Three prescriptions in one lens without the hard lines of a tri focal lens, it does cause some distortions in my perception.  I'm going to have to get a new pair of glasses just for bookbinding that are a single prescription..

My end papers were rippled. Because I used reversible PVA the instructor showed me how a slightly damp blotting paper could be used in a press with just the end papers could reactivate the PVA and flatten them out properly.

Well that is it for that pain in the backside bind. I can honestly say I didn't enjoy it.  So now we are working on the slipcase.  I chose a light grey paper for the interior that matches the grey in the first photo Albums decorative paper cover. It is now under boards for the night.

I should finish the slipcase just after lunch and get started on my third photo album which I will finish up on Friday.
