Finishing Press and Plough

Traditionally pictures show bookbinders leaning over their finishing press and plough as seen above. Now-a-days bookbinders usually use a hydraulic guillotine or a stack cutter. Both of them have a large blade that comes down evenly on the paper cutting it smoothly. Not like an office paper cutter where the cutting starts from the top and moves towards the bottom of the page. That works fine for a few sheets of paper but would cause the paper to fan out giving you an uneven cut. hydraulic guillotine Stack Cutter Those that can't afford such expensive equipment will either hand cut with a utility knife and ruler, or still use the Finishing press and plough but set on a tub or bench. Using a tub/bench/stand certainly makes it a lot easier and stable while using. Unfortunately my finishing press and plough did not come with a tub. 3D Printing and Bookbinding

There are at least two people selling 3D printed Bookbinding tools. I thought I'd give a try at designing my own for my specific needs and style (such as it is). I have fixed sizes of notebooks that I make. The covers are A4, A5, and A6 with the bookblock slightly smaller. So I thought I'd try designing my own where I like to put the kettle stitch and holes for the linen tape. Designed in Google SketchUp 8 Now I have a Creality CR-10, lots of people have had great success with theses inexpensive machines. Sadly I'm not one of those people. I've had parts break, and there is always something going wrong with it. Currently I have an under extrusion problem that I can't figure out. So after six and a half hours and four failed starts I finally had my hole awl guides. You can see the under extrusion as it looks like the layers are separating. I also should have increased the wall thickness as the needle went through the side by accident....

Lumbeck Binding

Emil Lumbeck was a German bookbinder that created not only the Double Fan method but created some of the first modern PVA for use in bookbinding. A student where I work has a book that was comb bound and he asked if I could bind it into a proper hardcover book. Since the pages are single sheets the only option is to do the Lumbeck binding method. Preparing the Book Block The last three months have been some of the wettest in recent history and I found out that the garage that I set up my workbench in leaks pretty badly so I'm forced to use my kitchen to do my binding. It isn't ideal as I don't have the space that I'm used to. I also lost some tools and supplies to the damp. This book is thick (29 mm), and it was a real hassle to get it squared up.
