First off the temperature was normal so I wasn't sweating all over my work! City and Guilds course #221 is Non-Adhesive Binds. This is for the second certification which I won't actually start my submissions until well after completing my first certification.
I know little of Non-Adhesive books so this will definitely be a learning experience.
First was a Conservation Cover. It is a simple book block sewn on tapes or ribbons. No glue with a card cover with slits for the tape/ribbons. It is all held together by folding the coverings.
We we shown to use two squares to mark the ribbon slits. When I do this again I will use a scalpel and more lighting. I was unhappy with my results.
We were asked to experiment with the weave so I had one side go under the cover and the other side over the cover. Then I fed the tapes back on themselves and tucked them in.
We did another conversation cover, however I wasn't paying attention properly and got my holes wrong.
Disappointed with my mistake I went with a simple cover with bows. Not really my type of thing.
Then we started on our Coptic Binding. Seven signatures, four sewing stations with 16/2 thread. For those that don't know 16 is the gauge of the thread. The lower the number the thicker the thread. 2 is for how many strands that makes up the thread.
We then marked up and punctured our boards. That made up the day.
