Bookbinding Class

I'm going to end up missing a lot of my Wednesday evening bookbinding classes at Oxford Brookes University this term do to my City & Guild courses.  I missed the first day and I'm going to miss the next two classes as well.  So on my third class I finished a Travel Guide to Switzerland. A book I found at the Gloucester Green Market for £1.00.  It has over a dozen beautiful maps that have been tipped in and that fold out of the book.  Now the original cover was blue but I thought since most of the Swiss flag was red I'd give it a red cover.  All I had to do was clean the spine, add new end papers, tip the old end papers onto the new end papers (they were maps also), and give it a new cover. The sewing was fine on the book.  The middle of the book has the most swell due to the tipped in maps. The printer gave no consideration to the extra thickness as the book was probably made to last only a few trips to Switzerland.

**EDIT**

Found pictures of the book how I found it.

With that project out of the way it was time to start on the book that my daughter got for me at a swap shop. "Any Given Weekend" is a mix of things for a young person to do over a weekend. From baking, science, and there is even a section on bookbinding! My daughter was delighted when I discovered that part as she had no idea it was included.  The paper is aging terribly and has a high acidic content. They are all browned and the outer pages are very brittle.  Surprisingly the sewing is holding together and if it wasn't I'm not sure the book would hold up to being resewn without the majority of the pages being enforced with Filmoplast R.

I've had to envelope the entire page with Filmoplast as it is so brittle the paper was flaking off just by handling it.

Trimmed up the excess

The page was then tipped on.  I also had to tip the last attached page to the page before it to give it some stability.

That was it for class. Class time is 18:15 - 20:30 and we had a demonstration on leather pairing as well.  Starting Monday I'm off for another five day course for my City & Guild certification.
