City & Guilds certification 1

I'm currently on a 5 day course for part of my City & Guilds certification hosted by Shepherds London in Wiltshire . I'm writing this post on my tablet and the Blogger app doesn't seem to have that many features. I'll do what I can.

Day 1

Introduction to bookbinding.

Now I've been doing this for about a year and I've already taken two introduction courses.  However I do find that I still pick up some tricks from new instructors that make it worth the money spent. This course is no exception as I've picked up a new tip for casing in my book boards.

There are only 6 students so that is a very good student teacher ratio in my opinion.  The area is spacious and clean, easy to work in. The other students are friendly and eager to learn which makes for an enjoyable experience. Class is 10:00-16:30

After going over the basics of fire safety, use of equipment, and grain direction, we started with a single section bind. I've not made one since last November and I had forgotten how quick and enjoyable they can be to make.

We attempted to make two single section binds. The first was done as a group,  step by step. The second we were left to our own and allowed to go at our own pace. However this time we had to fold and cut our papers from a single A0 sheet where as the first time the instructor did that for us. This is also something I've never done before as I normally purchase my paper in smaller, more manageable sizes. I managed to do all but place the coverings on to the spine and boards. I'm assuming I will be doing that first thing this morning.

I'll post either tonight or tomorrow morning on day 2.
