Work Area

I'm currently pretty lucky having a detached garage in Oxfordshire. Houses usually don't have garages, detached or not.  It has taken a lot of time, hard work, and unfortunately money to get it to be slightly useable.  When the Landladies took over the property they left a lot of rubbish in the garage.  Two car loads to the dump worth of items.  There is a long workbench in the garage that is old, very solid, but funny shaped. I roughly measured it and drew this up in SketchUp.

The garage is in such a state I'm too embarrassed to show you a picture of its current state.  However I have just ordered everything I need to revamp my work area and it should all be in by the end of the month. I need to find a good place to put the new press, which is now in the garage, without it getting in the way of either workstation. My workbench is split into two sections, Dry work and Wet Work. I don't want to be bumping into a 192 kg (425 lbs) press constantly. My second workbench is for paper only but is currently just holding clutter.  I have a dehumidifier which has been running for months non stop to keep the moisture levels down in the garage.  I have an electric heater for the winter and a few fans for the summer. It is not as ideal as a proper bookbinders workshop but better than not having the space at all.

The garage when I first moved in
I've ordered three lots of galvanised steel peg boards that are painted to prevent rust. You can't use the MDF Pegboards as they warp within a week of British weather. My second workbench came with those and it ripples like the waves. Between the pegboards are slotted shelving brackets so I can move the shelves around as I see fit over the next few years.

Thingiverse has plenty of free 3D printing files for pegboard items from paper towel rolls using dowel rods. I can use a longer dowel rod to hold bolts of bookcloth. Thread Holders for bookbinding thread. Even a scalpel holder for my scalpel. Paint holders, spray can holders. I might have to tweak the files in Blender as there are many types of pegboards (imperial vs. metric) and the pegs may not fit the holes I have.  I should be pretty organised when it is finished. Tool boxes are fine but I would prefer something a bit more detailed.  I have a ton of projects to work on but I need a clean and organised workspace to do that in.  It is just unfortunate that it is taking so long between work, family, and just life popping up for me to get this the way I want.

  1. I love a place for everything and everything in its place. Are you going to 3D print your own tool holders?

    1. Yes I do plan on 3D printing my own tool holders. I am still new at 3D printing and have difficulty with calibration.
